Last week, a package of bills introduced in the Michigan House of Representatives was presented as a response to Michigan's housing shortage and the need for more affordable housing. However, this legislation would essentially give developers the right to build in our community without any input from you or local officials.
We firmly believe that local development decisions belong at the local level. Every community is different, and zoning must account for local infrastructure capacity, neighborhood character, public safety and long-term planning. In practice, a blanket approach to zoning means residents lose their ability to shape what happens in their own neighborhoods.
We feel it is imperative to have everyone weigh in on the discussion by contacting our state representatives and expressing your opinions on the legislation.
