1. What code is currently in effect for Macomb Township?

2. Can I pull a permit for work done on my own property?

Yes! You can pull any permit for work done on your property. If you are having a contractor perform any portion of the work, we highly suggest having the contractor pull the permit. This way, we can hold them responsible for work done improperly. It is no faster or cheaper for a homeowner permit versus a contractor permit.

3. Whom do I report a violation of my subdivision association rules to?

Usually, you must report those violations to a board member of your homeowners association. However, if the violation is also covered under Macomb Township Ordinance, you may report it to our Code Enforcement Officer at 586-992-0710 x1.

4. Where can I find current flood insurance rates/maps (FIRMs)?

You can find the most current flood insurance rate maps at the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Flood Map Service Center (MSC) website.

5. I or my builder paid $2,000 bond for finish grading. When does that have to be completed and when is my money returned?

The Macomb Township Water and Sewer Department mandate when all bonded grades must be completed. You may call them to find out the date, at 586-598-0687. Once final grade has been approved, the bond money is generally refunded within 4 to 6 weeks of the grade approval.

7. Do I need a permit to cut down a tree on my property?

No. As long as the tree is on your property you may remove it. If a tree is on the lot line, you may only cut the portion that infringes on your property.

8. How do I pay for my Building Permit?

The Macomb Township Treasury Department takes cash, check or credit card (with credit card transaction fee required) at: 54111 Broughton Road Macomb, MI 48052 The Treasurer's Office is open Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

9. Can I move boxes into my home before final approval?

10. Where do I obtain a copy of my homeowners association by-laws?

These are obtained from the Macomb County Registrar of Deeds. You may contact them by telephone at 586-469-7953. Macomb County Registrar of Deeds Website

11. Can I get a permit for a shed, deck, pool, fence, etc., before my house has a final Certificate of Occupancy?

No. A final Certificate of Occupancy must be issued and the buyer have their name on the property deed before applying for permits.

12. Do I need a building permit to replace my roof?

13. How long does it take to receive my permit once I apply?

Since we review permits on a first-come, first-served basis, time for receiving permits back varies with the season. The best time to apply for permits is February through April, when we are less busy and turnaround time is much faster than during the busy summer months.

14. Can I use a mortgage survey in place of a plot plan?

No. The plot plan is a survey completed when the house was built and has already been reviewed by the Building Department. Please call us to request a copy of your plot plan. Your plot plan may be in storage and it may take a few days for us to obtain your records. Calling ahead will save you an extra trip. Call the Building Department at 586-992-0710.

15. I have a vacant lot near me that is overgrown with weeds and standing water. Where do I go for help?

You may call the Macomb Township Ordinance Enforcement Division, at 586-992-0710. They will contact the owner of the lot and help to resolve the situation.

16. There is a home being built next door to me with debris all over. Whom do I call?

In this case, please contact the Building Department, at 586-992-0710. We will notify the building inspector that is covering your area and they will notify the builder to clean the area.

17. The streets in my subdivision are very dirty. Whom do I call to get them cleaned?

Every person obtaining a Building Permit must also obtain a Soil Erosion permit from the Macomb County Drain Commission. When the streets in a subdivision get bad enough, the Drain Commission will shut the subdivision down for inspections until the streets are cleaned. You may call them at 586-469-5325.

18. Can I fax or email my Building Permit application?

Unfortunately, no. We are required to take in applications with only the original signature of the homeowner or the license holder. You may mail in your application, but be sure to check it over well. An incomplete application will be mailed back and cost you valuable time. Applications may be mailed to:
